The experience

Seven days lets you move through three distinct landscapes without rushing. You start at the foot of the Mulanje Massif, the highest peak in south-central Africa, and climb onto the high plateau with a local mountain guide. A route that takes you through forest, streams and waterfalls, with sweeping views across the tea country below. You spend the night in a mountain hut on the plateau itself, then walk back down past viewpoints and tea estates before heading north. The private vehicle and driver-guide stay with you throughout, so there's no switching between operators or waiting for group departures.

Liwonde National Park is where the wildlife emerges. You spend two full days there: morning and afternoon game drives in search of elephant, sable antelope, kudu, buffalo and black rhino, plus a morning boat safari along the Shire River where you glide close to hippo pods, basking crocodiles and elephant herds wading through the reeds. The river itself is the vantage point. You're on the water among the animals, not watching from a distance. After that, you transfer south to Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi, where the landscape shifts again to water and islands.

Your final two days are on Lake Malawi inside the UNESCO-listed national park. You snorkel among hundreds of colourful cichlid fish found nowhere else on earth, boat out to islands to watch African fish eagles dive, and cruise back into the bay at sunset. The last morning is unhurried: a relaxed time on the beach before the transfer back to Blantyre. Because this is a private tour, you set the pace at each stop. The driver-guide is Malawian and grew up in the region, so the knowledge is local and the route is built around what matters to you.
