The experience

The day starts with pickup from Antsiranana port and a drive inland through northern Madagascar's markets and villages toward Joffreville and Amber Mountain. The journey takes about an hour in an air-conditioned 4WD. Once at the mountain, you walk an easy trail to spot nocturnal lemurs, chameleons and endemic plants: the fauna and flora that make this region distinct. After that stop, the drive continues to the Red Tsingys, a geological formation of red limestone that occurs only in Madagascar. The site itself is a roughly hour-long walk on foot, and the landscape is the draw: the red stone formations rise from the earth in shapes that have no parallel elsewhere.

Lunch is included partway through the day. Before the return journey to the port, you'll be offered fresh coconut and seasonal local fruits. The whole excursion runs about seven hours from port to port. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language depending on availability. Bring hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun and heat are intense, and the walks, while accessible, require protection and proper footwear.

A final photo stop in Diego Suarez rounds out the day before you return to your boat. The route is designed for passengers with limited time ashore, fitting two major sites and the wildlife viewing into a single port call without requiring a car rental or independent navigation.
