The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup between 8:00 and 8:30 (morning option) or around 12:00 to 13:00 (afternoon option). You board a longtail boat at the pier and head onto the Mekong, passing rural villages, fishermen and the daily rhythms of life along the water. The landscape opens up beyond the high-speed railroad bridge on the town's edge, where limestone cliffs and dense forest line the river.
On the morning route, the boat makes its first stop at Ban Xang Hai, the Whisky Village, after just over an hour. You watch the process of making Lao Lao, the country's rice whiskey, and taste the fresh local versions: bottles are available to buy. The boat then continues slowly to Pak Ou Caves, where stairs from a small landing dock lead straight to the entrance. Inside the limestone caverns, Buddhist statues and idols fill the natural chambers. Your guide shares the legends and stories tied to these places of worship. After exploring, the boat enters the Ou River to pass the spectacular limestone cliffs, then a 30-minute ride down the Mekong brings you to lunch. On the afternoon route, you visit the caves first, then cruise downstream past villages as the sun sets, returning to town by 6:00 pm.
Lunch is a buffet served at a restaurant overlooking the Mekong River. The tour wraps around 2:00 to 2:30 pm (morning option) or 6:00 pm (afternoon option), with return to your hotel by minivan. Drinking water is provided throughout. An English-speaking guide accompanies the entire journey.
