Travel from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang

  • Cruise through Nam Ou valley
  • Have lunch at Manifa Elephant Camp
  • Visit Pak Ou Buddha caves by boat
  • Enjoy sunset cruise to Luang Prabang

The experience

The route starts with a boat cruise through the Nam Ou valley, where limestone cliffs rise above the water and the valley narrows as you travel downstream. Lunch happens at Manifa Elephant Camp, a stop on the Mekong where you eat a buffet meal with drinks included, giving you a chance to rest before the afternoon choice.

If you pick the afternoon option, the boat takes you to Pak Ou Caves, a pair of limestone caverns filled with Buddha statues that sit above the river. You can kayak at no extra charge if you want to paddle out on the water, or simply explore the caves and the village nearby. After that comes a whiskey village visit, then a sunset cruise back toward Luang Prabang as the light fades over the Mekong. If you choose the direct transfer instead, a minivan picks you up after lunch and drives you straight to your hotel, arriving around 2:30 PM and freeing up your afternoon.

The full tour runs eight hours from start to finish. Infants travel on an adult's lap. The caves carry a separate entrance fee not included in the tour price.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the two options at checkout?

Option 1 includes an afternoon of sightseeing: Pak Ou Caves by boat, optional kayaking, a whiskey village, and a sunset cruise back to Luang Prabang, arriving around 6 PM. Option 2 skips the afternoon activities and takes you directly by minivan after lunch, arriving around 2:30 PM instead. Pick Option 1 if you want to see more of the river and caves. Pick Option 2 if you'd rather settle into Luang Prabang early.

Do I need to book the kayaking separately if I want to paddle at Pak Ou?

No. Kayaking is optional and included at no extra charge on Option 1, so you can decide when you arrive at the caves whether you want to paddle or just walk around.

What are the Pak Ou Caves actually like?

Pak Ou Caves are two limestone caverns built into a cliff above the Mekong River, filled with thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims over centuries. You reach them by boat and explore on foot. The caves sit in a quiet spot with views back over the water and a small village nearby.

Is lunch included, and what kind of food is it?

Yes. Lunch is a buffet meal at Manifa Elephant Camp beside the Mekong, with drinks included. You eat there before choosing your afternoon route.

How long is the boat ride from Nong Khiaw?

The cruise through the Nam Ou valley takes several hours as part of the full eight-hour journey. The exact timing depends on which afternoon option you choose, but the river section itself is the main part of the trip.

What happens if I get motion sickness on the boat?

Bottled water is provided throughout the tour. The boat moves at a steady pace down the river. If you're concerned about motion sickness, take any medication you normally use before boarding and sit in the middle of the boat where movement is least noticeable.
