The experience
Wat Xieng Thong opens the day: a temple with ornate traditional Lao architecture that sits near the Mekong River. From there the guide takes you to Wat Mai, one of the largest temples in the city, known for its gilded façade and its position in front of the Night Market. The Royal Palace Museum comes next, a former royal residence between Phou Si Hill and the river, now holding rare religious and cultural artifacts from the Lang Xang Kingdom.
The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre occupies a UNESCO-protected historical building and displays ethnic clothing, religious objects and working tools from Laos' different ethnic groups: a way to understand how the various communities live and what their traditions are. Then comes the physical centerpiece: Mount Phousi is a 328-step climb that opens onto panoramic views of the old town, the rivers and the mountains beyond. Buddhist shrines dot the hillside along the way.
As the sun sets, the guide walks you through the Night Market for an hour, open from dusk until 10 PM. The stalls sell handmade textiles, quilts, carvings, basketry, ceramics and paper goods: a mix of local craftsmanship that gives a direct look at what people make and sell in Luang Prabang. Your driver returns you to your hotel when the market walk ends.
