The experience
Luang Prabang's biggest market supplies the whole town with fresh goods and cooked meals. You start with hotel pickup by local tuk tuk, then walk through both the indoor and outdoor sections where your guide introduces you to market traders and explains the history behind each dish. This is not a restaurant tour. You eat where locals eat in the morning, standing at stalls or sitting on low stools, tasting the real flavors of Laotian cuisine instead of hotel breakfast versions.
The four dishes you sample are naem khao: a steamed rice cake with egg and sour-sweet sauce; khao poun, an authentic rice noodle with pork and fresh herbs; pun mang, a blend of pork, lemongrass, peanuts and eggplant rolled in lettuce; and kao sung ka ya, a sticky rice dessert with shaved coconut. Your guide walks you through the market's colorful food displays, pointing out ingredients and explaining how each dish connects to Laotian and Southeast Asian food culture. You get photographs of the stalls and the traders, and the chance to ask questions about what you're eating.
Coffee or tea and bottled water are included throughout the tour. The whole experience runs two hours, which leaves the rest of your morning free for the temples and other sites Luang Prabang is known for.
