The experience
You start on the Nam Ou River, paddling from either Ban Pak Ou or Ban Hat Kho depending on your fitness level, and pass limestone cliffs called Pha Aen. The paddle takes you to the confluence where the Nam Ou meets the Mekong, and that's where Pak Ou Caves sit on the riverbank. A guide walks you through the caverns for about 30 minutes. They're filled with thousands of Buddha images left by pilgrims over centuries, and the space itself is carved into the rock face overlooking the water.
After the caves, you paddle the Mekong for another 30 minutes downstream to Manifa Elephant Camp, where you can shower and rest in their garden. On the full-day option, lunch is a buffet or picnic (vegetarian available on request) and happens during the day. The half-day finishes around 2pm. The full-day wraps at 4–5pm. If you choose the sunset cruise add-on, a boat takes you back to Luang Prabang by 6pm, and you stop at Ban Xang Hai village along the way: a small settlement known for local rice wine production. Transport back to your accommodation or the city center is included.
You can reschedule up to 7pm the day before by emailing or visiting the Manifa Travel office opposite Villa Santi Hotel. Private tours with your own guide and transportation are available on request. Manifa Travel has run trips here for over 25 years.
