Step-by-step itinerary

  • View city from Kenyatta International Convention Centre
  • Visit Nairobi viewpoint at Uhuru Park
  • Walk through Central Business District landmarks
  • Tour Maasai Market pottery company
  • Shop at Utamaduni craft center

The Experience

The day starts at the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill, where Kenya's cultural and natural heritage fills permanent galleries. You'll stand in front of Ahmed, the massive elephant who became a symbol of the 1980s poaching crisis and was placed under 24-hour guard by President Jomo Kenyatta. The museum holds the Hominid Skull Room—described as the single most important collection of early human fossils in the world—alongside a hall of at least 900 stuffed bird specimens from East Africa, ethnological exhibits like the Kalenjin cloak made from Sykes Monkey skins, and a mosaic map of Kenya constructed from the country's butterflies.

From there, your guide leads you through Nairobi's city center on foot. The Kenyatta International Convention Centre, a 28-storey landmark on Harambee Avenue, offers a 360-degree view of the city from its rooftop. You'll walk through the Central Business District and Uhuru Park, hearing real-time stories about pre-independence and post-independence Nairobi as you pass landmarks including Kipande House. The guide shares the history embedded in the streets themselves—how the city transformed from colonial outpost to modern capital.

The Maasai Market stop is a working pottery studio, not a typical tourist shop. Single mothers from poor neighborhoods hand-make beads through every stage of production, from start to finish. The center began when women who formerly worked for Kazuri Beads factory started their own operation during the pandemic, turning it into a women's empowerment hub where they earn a living to support their families. You see the work happen and can purchase directly.

Utamaduni Craft Centre, a converted Kikuyu house with 18 shops in Karen, holds African crafts, antiques and art. The garden restaurant overlooks the Ngong hills, and if you watch birds, the exotic species in the grounds will hold your attention while you rest. After this, the tour closes with live cultural performances—traditional folklore dances from different ethnic groups, with Samburu and Maasai warriors among the most impressive. Lunch is available for purchase if you want it.
