The experience
The morning starts at your Diani hotel with pickup in a comfortable car at 8 AM. By 8:30 you're at the local vegetable market in Ukunda, watching how the community buys and sells produce, then moving to a primary school around 9:30 where you observe children in a typical classroom and can interact with them directly. This is not a staged performance. You're seeing the school as it runs on any weekday morning.
From there the route heads into the village itself. You visit a local home to see how people live day-to-day, then meet a traditional healer (called a bush doctor locally) who works with medicinal herbs and roots. He walks you through the plants he uses and how traditional healing practices work in the community. If you want to stay longer, there's an optional Giriama traditional dance performance at 12:30 where you can watch or join in and learn some steps. The car returns you to your hotel by 1 PM.
The tour runs five hours total. Your guide speaks English and travels with you the whole time. Pickup is included from any Diani or Ukunda hotel, and the charges for the bush doctor visit and the dance performance are built in. If you bring sweets for the schoolchildren, they're always welcome, though it's optional.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 10 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What exactly happens at the local school visit?
The local school visit lets you walk into a working classroom during the school day, observe how lessons run, and talk directly with the students. It's a real school environment, not a tour stop set up for visitors, so you see daily learning as it happens.
Who is the traditional healer and what does he teach?
The traditional healer, known locally as a bush doctor, uses medicinal herbs and roots in his practice. He explains which plants he uses for different ailments and how traditional healing methods work in the community, so you leave understanding a different approach to medicine than you may be used to.
Is the traditional dance performance something I have to do?
The Giriama traditional dance at 12:30 PM is optional. You can watch the performance, or if you want to join in, the dancers will teach you some steps and bring you into it. Either way, it's included in the tour price.
What time does the tour end and how do I get back to my hotel?
The tour returns you to your hotel by 1 PM. Your guide drives you back in the same comfortable car that picked you up in the morning, so you're back in time for lunch or an afternoon at the beach.
What's included in the price and what costs extra?
The tour price includes private transport, your English-speaking guide, hotel pickup, the school visit, the traditional healer meeting, and the optional dance performance. Bringing sweets for the schoolchildren is optional and not included, but always appreciated.
