The Experience
The tour starts with a ride up Kok Tobe, the 1,100-meter hill on the city's southeast edge. Panoramic cabins carry you 1.6 kilometers in about six minutes to the summit, where a 372-meter TV tower crowns the ridge and views open across Almaty and the mountains beyond. From there, the route leads to Panfilovets' Park in central-east Almaty, where Zenkov Cathedral rises without a single nail in its wooden frame. Built between 1904 and 1907, the structure survived the 1911 earthquake and was restored to active Russian Orthodox use in 1990 after decades as a museum. The interior is as detailed as the exterior; views shift as you walk around it. The park itself holds an eternal flame and a black monument honoring the 28 soldiers of the Panfilov unit who died fighting the Nazis outside Moscow in 1941–45, buying time for the Soviet capital's defense. The memorial spans both the 1917–20 Civil War and the 1941–45 war, with soldiers represented from all 15 Soviet republics.
The final stop is the Green Bazaar at the intersection of Zenkov and Zhipek Zholy streets—an Eastern market where vendors sell meat, spices, fruit, textiles and furniture, and where bargaining is the rhythm of the day.
