experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air was already warm when we left the Dead Sea behind. Our driver chatted about the farms along the road—tiny green patches in all that beige. It’s a short ride to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, but you feel like you’re crossing into another world. At El-Maghtas, our local guide met us by the shaded entrance. There’s a quiet hush here; even the birds seem to keep it down. Walking along the riverbank, you can see old stone foundations poking through the reeds—remnants of churches and baptismal pools. The guide pointed out where Pope John Paul II stood back in 2000. I dipped my hand in the river; it’s cool and muddy, not what I expected at all.

You’ll notice people from everywhere—pilgrims whispering prayers, a group from Greece lighting candles near a mosaic sign. The guide explained how this spot is sacred for Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike. There’s even an old well nearby that still smells faintly of wet earth and wild mint if you lean close enough. Don’t confuse this Bethany with the one near Jerusalem—the stories are different here.

Madaba comes next—a busy little city with mosaic shops lining the main street. We ducked into Saint George’s Church just as a wedding finished up; rose petals stuck to our shoes on the way in. The famous mosaic map covers most of the floor—tiny tiles showing Jerusalem, Jericho, even little boats on the Dead Sea. Our guide told us it was discovered by accident in 1897 when they were fixing up the church floor.

The Archaeological Park is just a few minutes’ walk away—open air and full of broken columns and more mosaics tucked under glass panels. I liked Saint John’s Church best though; if you climb up to the bell tower (it’s a bit of a squeeze), you get this patchwork view over Madaba’s rooftops and minarets. Downstairs there’s an underground museum dedicated to Saint John—it smells faintly of incense and old stone.

Mount Nebo is last on the route. The wind picks up as you climb out of the car—sometimes it whistles through gaps in the monastery walls. On clear days (we got lucky), you can see Jericho shimmering across the valley and even Jerusalem if you squint past the haze. Inside, faded mosaics cover parts of the floor: peacocks with missing eyes, hunters chasing deer—our guide pointed out which ones date back to the 6th century AD. It feels peaceful up there; even with other visitors around, everyone seems quieter somehow.
