The experience
The 30,000 cherry trees covering Yoshinoyama bloom only between March and April, and when they do, the mountain becomes one of Japan's most storied landscapes. The hike itself follows an 8 km route through these blooms, passing the sacred sites and ancient trails that emperors and poets have walked since the Asuka and Nara periods. A local guide walks with you, explaining the cultural and historical layers woven through the mountain: why this place mattered then and why it still draws people now.
Entry to Kinpusenji and Chikurin-in, two of the temples on the route, is included in the tour. The walk takes about 5 hours total, moving through the mountain at a pace that lets you absorb both the landscape and the guide's knowledge of the place. You'll need comfortable shoes and clothing suited to a mountain environment. The path is steep enough that a high level of physical fitness makes the difference between enjoying the day and struggling through it.
The guide is available in English, German or Japanese, and children from age 6 can join. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them to reach the starting point. Food and drinks are not included, so plan accordingly for the length of the hike.
