Summary

Discover Tono’s Legends, Shrines, and Traditional Village Life

You’ll walk through quiet streams said to be home to kappa spirits, tie wishes at love shrines, and step inside centuries-old farmhouses—all with stories brought to life by your licensed local guide. This tour lets you shape your own adventure in Tono’s world of folklore and tradition.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed in Tono was the quiet—just the sound of water moving through the stream behind Joken-ji Temple. Our guide, Ms. Sato, pointed out where locals say kappa—those cheeky river sprites—still play tricks on people. There’s even a tiny shrine tucked away near the water where expectant mothers hang red cloths shaped like little pillows, hoping for good luck with breastfeeding. The air smelled faintly of moss and wet stone, and honestly, it felt like stepping into one of those old folk tales.

We wandered over to a small wayside shrine that’s supposed to help you find love. There’s an unmanned stall selling strips of red cloth; you’re meant to tie one to a tree using just your left hand. It took me two tries to get it right—guess I’m not alone! Our guide explained how these traditions have been passed down for generations here in Iwate Prefecture.

Later on, we visited the Kikuchi Residence at Denshoen Park—a real farmhouse from 200 years ago. You can almost picture families and their horses living together under that L-shaped roof (they call it Nanbu Magariya). The house is being renovated until 2025, but you can still see plenty about rural life in the theme park: old tools, folk crafts, and even a hall filled with hundreds of Oshirasama dolls. We stopped by the Hall of Stories too; there was an elderly storyteller sharing local legends in dialect while kids listened wide-eyed. If you’re hungry, there’s a simple restaurant inside serving regional dishes—nothing fancy but honest food.
