Summary

Tokyo’s neon nights, hidden shrines and Golden Gai alleys in every shot

You’ll slip into Shinjuku’s after-dark energy with a welcome drink before wandering neon-lit streets for portraits at Hanazono Shrine, Golden Gai’s retro bars, Kabukicho’s wild lights, and peaceful Jouenji Temple. A pro photographer guides you through each spot and sends you 20 edited shots—so you get to remember Tokyo’s nighttime pulse long after your feet recover.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I nearly walked right past the bar where we started — Marugo Grande — because I was too busy gawking at all the lights and signs in Shinjuku Sanchome. Gota waved me over, camera already slung around his neck, and handed me a drink (I picked something citrusy but honestly just needed anything cold). It was a weird relief to sit down first, laugh about how lost I’d gotten on the way, and realize everyone else was just as excited-slash-nervous about having their photo taken at night in Tokyo. The city felt alive — you could hear snippets of laughter from the street below and that low electric hum from all the neon.

We wandered out into the streets after that, weaving through crowds and dodging cyclists. Gota had this way of spotting tiny pockets of light or color — like at Hanazono Shrine, where the lanterns glowed orange against the dark wood. He showed us how to stand so the light hit just right (I’m not sure I nailed it but he said it looked “cinematic,” which made me laugh). There was this moment in Golden Gai when a bartender poked her head out to say hi; she recognized Gota and gave us a little wave. The alleys there are so narrow you can almost brush both walls with your elbows if you try. It smells like grilled chicken and old beer — not unpleasant, just… lived-in.

Kabukicho was wild — louder, brighter, more chaotic than anywhere else we went on this Shinjuku night photo tour. I tried to look cool for my portrait under the Godzilla Head sign but mostly ended up grinning like an idiot. Jouenji Temple was quieter; we stood under rows of lanterns while Gota snapped away. By then my feet were starting to ache (it’s about 3km total walking), but honestly I didn’t want it to end yet. On Shintoshin Bridge, looking out over all those skyscrapers lit up against the sky, I felt small in a good way. Still think about that view sometimes.
