The Experience

The museum opened in 1983 and holds everything from Renaissance oil paintings to contemporary photography, Japanese ceramics, lacquer ware, armor and swords. The special exhibition running through December focuses on samurai art and the warrior aesthetic of feudal Japan, so if you're in Tokyo between now and late fall, that's the draw.

The permanent collection is the real reason to go back. Five hundred years of Western paintings—Renaissance through postmodernism—fills the galleries, and the photography section alone justifies an afternoon. There's also a jewelry collection on special display that most visitors don't know about. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; reception closes at 4:30 p.m., so you need to arrive with at least thirty minutes to walk through. The museum is closed Mondays, and if a Monday is a holiday, they close Tuesday instead. It's near public transportation, fully wheelchair accessible, and you can bring a stroller if you're traveling with small children.
