Whisk your own matcha in a tatami room where you ask questions as you go

A tea ceremony class in a traditional machiya in Naramachi, Nara, where you learn the basics step by step, taste a bowl prepared by your host, then whisk matcha yourself. The group stays small enough that you can stop and ask at any point. Your Nara-born host points you toward local shops and lanes after the session ends.

The experience

You arrive at a machiya in Naramachi, the old merchant quarter of Nara, and step into a tatami room softly lit through shoji screens. A host in kimono settles you with hojicha and explains the basics: how to bow, how to handle the utensils, what omotenashi (the hospitality at the heart of tea culture) actually means. A seasonal wagashi arrives, made to be enjoyed first with the eyes. Then your host whisks a bowl of matcha for you to taste, unhurried, so you understand the scent and the finish before you make one yourself.

The teaching moves from watching to doing. You choose a bowl, warm your hands with hot water, and whisk matcha with your own hands. Your host shows you how a chasen, the bamboo whisk, is made in Takayama, a short distance away in Nara Prefecture, where roughly 95% of Japan's handmade tea whisks come from. The room is quiet enough that you can ask a question at any point and get an answer that matters.

Before you leave, your Nara-born host tells you where to go next: the shops and lanes that no guidebook lists. You walk out knowing how to whisk matcha, not just having watched someone else do it.

What’s included
