The experience

You arrive in Takamatsu with a free afternoon or morning and no fixed plan. The guide meets you on foot in a designated area and asks what you want to see. You pick 2–3 sites from the list: Ritsurin Koen, a landscape garden built during the early Edo Period with ponds, hills, historic trees and pavilions set against Mt. Shiun; Takamatsu Castle, built in 1590 on the waterfront with saltwater moats that draw directly from the Seto Inland Sea; or the city center's covered shopping arcade, which stretches nearly 2.7 kilometers and connects the castle to the garden. The guide knows the history (the feudal lords who built the garden, the Ikoma and Matsudaira clans who ruled from the castle, the crafts and local specialties the region is known for), and explains it as you walk.

The tour runs four hours, which is long enough to see a few sites without rushing but short enough to leave the rest of your day open. Because you choose what to visit, the pace and the stops are yours: if you want to linger in the garden, you do. If you want to walk through the shopping arcade and stop for Sanuki udon, the guide adjusts. The guide is a government-licensed interpreter certified by the Japanese government, which means they have studied Japanese culture and history formally and can answer questions that go beyond the standard script. Entrance fees to the sites are not included, so you pay as you go.
