Your first stop is Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, then Tsukimawari Park, where you walk a forest pilgrimage path lit by nearly 100 lanterns—the atmosphere shifts into something quiet and removed from the everyday. During cherry blossom season (late March to early April), around 100 blooming trees line the path, though seasonal conditions may affect what you see on any given day.

From there you continue to Amanoiwato Shrine, a sacred site tied to Japanese mythology, and Amano Yasukawara, a spiritual cave where visitors traditionally stack stones and make wishes. The guide explains the legends and the cultural meaning of these places as you move through them, grounded in the natural rock formations and forest that surround each site. The order of visits may shift depending on local conditions to keep the day running smoothly.

The heart of the tour is Takachiho Gorge, where you have free time to explore on your own. The gorge is known for its towering basalt cliffs rising up to 70 meters, a clear river, and Manai Falls, ranked among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. You can walk scenic paths and viewpoints including Takachiho Sandanbashi Bridge and the Sennin no Byobuiwa rock formations. If you want to experience the gorge from the water, a boat ride is available (subject to weather and river conditions), and tickets can be reserved online up to two weeks ahead to secure a time slot during busy seasons.

The return to Fukuoka is a comfortable drive back through the same peaceful countryside, giving you time to rest and reflect on the day's walk through shrines, caves and one of Kyushu's most dramatic landscapes. From July to September, ice-cream is included on the tour.
