It runs three hours with two daily departures at 9am and 1pm, and welcomes ages 2 to 75, with practice in ankle-deep water before you venture deeper.

The experience

What makes this different is the setup: you meet at Summer Resort Miyakojima, a shop in the center of the island 15 minutes by car from the airport. After filling out a program form and getting fitted for a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket, all free, your PADI-certified guide walks you through a solid lecture for beginners. The practice happens in shallow water where your feet touch the bottom, so even small children and people who have not snorkeled before can get comfortable before the actual search begins.

The snorkel itself lasts about 40 minutes in Miyakojima's clear water, where you look for tropical fish and coral landscape. Your guide carries a GoPro and shoots photos and video the whole time. You get the data on the day with no limit on how many shots or any extra charge. If someone in your group does not want to use a mask, box glasses work too. The shop has separate hot water showers, changing rooms, hair dryers, shampoo and conditioner, so you rinse off and change before you leave. A powder space is available for women.

The tour runs three hours total and requires a minimum of two people per departure. Morning and afternoon slots start at 9am and 1pm. Coin lockers are available for 200 yen if you need to store anything during the activity.
