Throw real steel shuriken at wooden and straw targets at Ninja Cafe Takayama, a hands-on ninja training facility in the historical city. A senior ninja instructor teaches the technique in English or Japanese, and the activity runs 30 minutes with one drink included. Children from age 3 can participate, and all areas are wheelchair accessible.

The experience

You arrive at Ninja Cafe Takayama and throw real steel shuriken at targets from up to 5 meters away. The senior ninja staff member shows you the grip and release, then you step up and throw. When the blade sticks into the wooden or straw target, that's a success. Children throw from closer range, so the distance adjusts to the thrower. The feeling of a hit is immediate and physical: the shuriken either lands or it doesn't.

The facility displays historical helmets, swords, and tea utensils that frame what you're doing inside the context of old Japan. The experience runs 30 minutes and includes one drink. The instructor speaks English or Japanese, so language is not a barrier. All surfaces and areas are wheelchair accessible, and public transportation stops are nearby if you're visiting from Nagoya or Gifu.
