The Experience

The first thing I remember is the soft clatter of our guide’s umbrella as we ducked into Shitenno-ji Temple. It was quieter than I expected—just the faint sound of sandals on stone and the smell of incense drifting through the air. Our guide, Emi, told us how this was one of Japan’s oldest temples (I had no idea), and she pointed out some tiny turtles sunning themselves near the pond. I tried to say “arigatou” with the right Kansai lilt—Emi laughed and corrected me gently. Already felt like we were seeing Osaka differently.

Shinsekai hit me like a wave after that calm—the colors, all those old neon signs blinking even in daylight, and the smell of fried kushikatsu everywhere. We squeezed past locals chatting over beer at noon (I mean, why not?) and Emi explained how Tsutenkaku Tower used to be Osaka’s pride before all the skyscrapers came along. She bought us skewers—hot, crispy, dipped once in sauce—and I burnt my tongue because I couldn’t wait. That’s when it really started to feel like a private tour of Osaka: just wandering, eating, laughing at my terrible pronunciation.

Kuromon Ichiba Market was wild—crowded but somehow inviting. The seafood stalls were stacked with things I couldn’t name (one guy handed me a slice of something pink and salty—I still don’t know what it was but it was good). There was this sweet smell from a mochi stand nearby that made me stop mid-sentence. Emi knew half the vendors by name; she waved at an old lady selling pickles who pressed us to try something sour and crunchy. We took our time here—no rushing—which I really appreciated.

Later on, standing under Osaka Castle’s huge white walls while school kids ran past yelling in Japanese, I got this weird sense of how old and new everything is here. The view from up top wasn’t clear that day—bit hazy—but you could see all these layers of city stretching out forever. Emi told us about samurai battles right where we stood; honestly, my feet were tired but my brain was spinning with all that history. Dotonbori after dark just sealed it: neon everywhere, takoyaki sizzling on grills, people shouting and laughing over the canal bridges. It felt like being inside someone else’s favorite memory.
