The experience
Onomichi is a gritty old seaport town with steep hillsides full of temples, literary sites and painted cat stones. The guide meets you on foot in the designated area and takes you to the 2 or 3 sites you've chosen from the available list. Senkō-ji Temple, the most impressive, sits high on the hillside with views out to sea and is reachable either by a steep 15- to 25-minute hike or by the Senkō-ji-yama Ropeway. The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art on Ikuchijima Island holds the work of one of Japan's most famous painters, a student in Hiroshima in 1945 who spent his career exploring themes of peace and cultural exchange within Asia. Kosanji Temple, also on Ikuchijima, is a 1936 foundation with replica buildings modeled after Japan's most famous temples, including copies of Nikko Toshogu's Yomeimon Gate.
The tour works around what draws you. If you want literary and artistic Onomichi, the guide can focus on the museums and the alleyways where local artists have left their mark. If temples are your priority, the steep walks and ropeways connect several within the four hours. Neko no Hosomichi, a 200-meter alley lined with painted cat stones and leading to a three-floor pagoda, sits between the shrine and the temple and takes minutes to walk. The guide speaks English and Japanese, knows the town's layout and history, and adjusts the pace and stops to fit what you want to see. This is not a fixed route.
This is a walking tour, so comfortable shoes matter. The terrain includes steep hillside paths to reach some temples, though the ropeway offers an alternative to the hike. Entrance fees to the sites you visit are not included and are paid separately. The guide's entry to those sites is covered. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it, and all areas and surfaces in the designated tour zone are wheelchair accessible.
