Summary

Snorkel Kerama Islands from Naha with lunch and local crew

You’ll float above bright coral in Kerama’s clear waters with a friendly local guide who helps even beginners feel at home. Enjoy lunch on deck between snorkeling stops near Tokashiki and Zamami Islands—maybe spot a sea turtle if you’re lucky—and return to Naha feeling sun-warmed and changed by that unreal blue.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t really expect the water around Okinawa’s Kerama Islands to look that blue — like someone turned up the color just for us. We set off from Naha early (I was half-awake, honestly), but the crew had this easy way of making everyone feel like we’d done this before. Our guide, Saki, handed out wetsuits and grinned when I fumbled with the straps — “No problem!” she said, showing me how to fix it. The boat ride out was windy but not cold; you could smell salt and sunscreen everywhere. I kept thinking about how far Tokyo felt from here.

We stopped near Tokashiki Island first. Saki pointed at a shadow in the water — “Maybe turtle!” she whispered, though I didn’t see it until much later. The snorkeling itself was…well, I’m not sure how to describe floating above coral that bright. There were these tiny yellow fish darting around my hands, and every time I lifted my head I could hear someone laughing or coughing seawater (me). Lunch came in little boxes — rice balls, pickles, something sweet I still can’t name — and we ate on deck while drying off in the sun. It wasn’t fancy but it hit the spot.

Later we drifted closer to Zamami Island. The current picked up a bit but Saki kept checking on us, waving from her mask with a thumbs-up. At one point I tried asking about a fish in Japanese; she laughed and answered in English anyway (“Parrotfish! They eat coral”). The sky clouded over for a moment and everything went quiet except for waves slapping against the hull — kind of peaceful actually. By the time we headed back toward Naha, everyone looked sun-tired and happy. I still think about that blue when I close my eyes sometimes.
