The experience
You arrive at your hotel or the port and a guide meets you to begin a seven-hour walking tour that moves between sites using public transportation. The day centers on Nagasaki's dual identity: a place where European traders and Japanese culture intersected during centuries of isolation, and the only city to experience atomic bombing. A licensed guide who speaks English provides historical context and insider knowledge as you move through the city.
The Atomic Bomb Museum displays photographs, videos and artifacts from the day of the bombing and its aftermath: what happened in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, told through the accounts of people who witnessed it. The museum's images are direct and difficult. If you know this will be too much, tell the guide before the tour starts or on the day itself, and the itinerary shifts to a different stop instead. Ōura Church, built in 1864 by French missionaries, still stands with visible scars from the blast. The Peace Park sits on a hill above the bomb's hypocenter, centered on a statue that symbolizes the city's wish for lasting peace. The park offers a moment of reflection rather than shock.
Glover Garden preserves six Western-style buildings from the Meiji period, relocated and restored on a hillside with views over Nagasaki Port. The stone pavement and steps keep the feel of the settlement era. If you choose the Mount Inasa option instead of some other stops, you ride a ropeway to the 333-meter summit, where the city and harbor spread below you: by day a landscape of hills and water, by night a sea of lights that earned the title of one of the world's three major night views. The bridge called Megane-bashi, one of Japan's three most famous, is an optional stop. When the water is low, you can descend to the river's edge.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2).
What happens if I find the Atomic Bomb Museum too difficult to visit?
You can swap the museum for another stop on the itinerary without changing the rest of the day. Tell your guide before the tour starts or on the morning itself, and the route adjusts to a different site.
Does the tour include entry to all the sites, or do I pay separately?
Entry to the Atomic Bomb Museum, Ōura Church, Glover Garden, and the Mount Inasa Observatory (if you choose that option) are all included. Public transportation between stops is also covered.
What is Glover Garden, and why is it worth visiting?
Glover Garden is a hillside park holding six restored Western-style buildings from the Meiji period, three of them designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The stone pavement and architecture preserve the look of the 19th-century foreign settlement, and the views over Nagasaki Port make it a popular spot for photographs.
Is Mount Inasa included, or is it an extra option?
Mount Inasa is an optional choice you make at checkout. If you select it, the ropeway ride to the 333-meter summit and the observatory entry are included, and some other stops are adjusted to fit the time. If you don't choose it, the tour includes Megane-bashi bridge and Ōura Church instead.
How much walking is involved, and what is the physical demand?
The tour is a walking tour that uses public transportation to move between sites, so you walk around each location but don't trek between them on foot. The operator recommends at least a moderate level of fitness. Strollers and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children.
Does the guide speak English, and can I arrange a different language?
The guide is a nationally licensed expert who speaks English and Mandarin Chinese. If you need a different language, contact the operator in advance to discuss options.
