- Visit Nishi-no-Musashizuka grave site
- Meditate at Reigando cave
The experience
The Shimada Museum opens the tour with items directly tied to Musashi: swords believed to have belonged to him, and portraits including one depicting his famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryujima. The director leads the tour when available, with an English-speaking guide providing explanations throughout. From there, the route moves to Nishi-no-Musashizuka, located within the family grave of Terao Nobuyuki, one of Musashi's students. A natural rock at the site bears characters for "Harunobu Koji": Harunobu being Musashi's real name and Koji the title for someone devoted to Buddhism outside the priesthood. Terao Magonojo, Nobuyuki's brother and Musashi's most important student, received the manuscript of The Book of Five Rings. This stop connects directly to that lineage.
Reigando cave, the final stop, is where Musashi retreated during his last five years in Kumamoto and wrote The Book of Five Rings: a text on the essentials of warfare and swordsmanship. You'll spend time meditating in the cave itself, imagining the swordsman's twilight years in that space. The cave sits within the grounds of Unganzen-ji Temple in the mountains. Paths have uneven footing, so wear shoes suited to walking. If weather or other conditions prevent meditation in the cave, the experience moves to a hall at the temple. Near the cave entrance, the Five Hundred Disciples of Buddha (Gohyaku Rakan) (a series of distinctly shaped stone statues) line a narrow path up the mountainside. Depending on conditions, a swordsmanship display by Musashi's disciples may also be viewable.
The hired car picks you up from your hotel in Kumamoto City and returns you there at the end. Bring comfortable walking shoes and socks (some locations require shoes to be removed), and leave large luggage at your hotel or in a locker beforehand. The guide stays with you from pickup through the final stop. Children under five may join free but won't have car seats or access to experience activities. Those under fifteen or not yet in middle school must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and written parental permission is required for anyone under eighteen.
