Miyakojima night jungle tour: giant coconut crab and stargazing
Find night creatures in the jungle, then look up at stars the city hides
A 90-minute night jungle and stargazing tour on Miyakojima guides you through subtropical forest to spot rare nocturnal wildlife like the giant coconut crab, then pauses for stargazing under skies with far less light pollution than mainland Japan. Hotel pickup is included; the guide leads in English or Japanese and provides flashlights and a safety briefing. Ages 3–65 only; pregnant travelers and those with certain medical conditions cannot participate.
The Experience
The tour starts at 20:00 in summer or 19:30 in winter, depending on the season. You'll meet your guide at the field—exact details arrive by email the day before—and get a flashlight and safety briefing before heading into the jungle. The guide knows the paths and will support you as you search for the island's nocturnal residents, including the giant coconut crab that lives nowhere else in Japan. After about 45 minutes in the forest, the group pauses to look up at the night sky. Miyakojima sits far enough from city lights that the stars are visible in a way mainland stargazing spots cannot match, and on clear nights the difference is immediate.
The whole experience runs about 90 minutes from start to finish. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if your accommodation is on the main island of Miyakojima—Kurima, Ikema, and Irabu Islands are outside the service area, though you can arrange to meet the guide directly at the field instead. There are no restrooms at the site, so use facilities before you arrive. The tour runs in rain but may be canceled if field conditions become unsafe. Tours operate in both English and Japanese, and children as young as three can join, though infants must sit on an adult's lap and the tour is not suitable for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or certain neurological conditions.
Flashlights, liability insurance, and activity fees are all included. You'll also receive a participant-exclusive coupon page for local restaurants and shops. No rental car is needed, and no alcohol before the tour—the guide will brief you on what to bring and wear for a night in the jungle.

What kind of wildlife will I actually see on the night jungle walk?
The giant coconut crab is the signature find—it's unique to Miyakojima and rarely seen elsewhere in Japan. The guide will also point out other nocturnal creatures that live in the subtropical forest, though sightings depend on the night and weather conditions.
How dark does it get, and will I be able to see stars clearly?
Miyakojima has far less city light than mainland Japan, which is why it's a known stargazing spot. On clear nights, the sky is noticeably brighter with stars than you'd see near urban areas, though visibility depends on cloud cover and atmospheric conditions on the night you tour.
Is hotel pickup really included, or do I have to meet you somewhere?
Pickup is generally available across the main island of Miyakojima and is included in the tour price. Depending on booking volume, you may occasionally be asked to meet the guide directly at the field instead; the operator will confirm your arrangement when they email details the day before.
Can I bring my young child, and what's the age limit?
Children ages 3 to 65 can participate. Infants under 3 cannot join, though specialized infant seats are available if you have a child aged 3 or older. Pregnant travelers are not permitted to participate.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The tour operates in rain, but it may be canceled if field conditions become unsafe. The operator will contact you by 18:00 the day before to confirm whether the tour is running or to reschedule.
Do I need any special gear or preparation?
Flashlights are provided. Use the restroom before arrival, as there are no facilities at the field. Wear clothes suitable for a subtropical jungle at night, avoid alcohol before the tour, and arrive on time so the guide can brief you on safety before you head into the forest.
