The Experience

The class starts with dressing. You walk through more than 100 kimono and pick the one that appeals to you—the staff handles all the layers and fastenings, so you step out fully dressed without needing to know how the garment works. Once you're in silk, you move into the tea ceremony space inside the temple, away from the crowds outside.

A tea master conducts the ceremony and teaches you the formal manner of drinking matcha—the powdered green tea that has a specific way of being held, sipped and appreciated. Then you make your own bowl. You learn the motions, the whisking technique, how to fold the cloth. The tea master watches and corrects. When it's ready, you drink what you prepared, and it comes with a dried sweet that pairs with the slight bitterness of the tea. The whole sequence takes about an hour.

During the lesson, staff photograph you in the kimono and at the tea ceremony. You collect the images by filling out a short questionnaire at the end, so you leave with a record of the morning. The temple itself is 300 years old and sits in a quiet part of Miyajima, which means the atmosphere stays calm even though the island draws tourists all day.
