Summary

Wander Kyoto’s torii gates and meet Nara’s bowing deer in one relaxed day

You’ll start your day leaving Osaka behind for Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine, walking beneath its famous torii gates with stories from your local guide. Lunch and wandering time in Gion brings glimpses of old Japan before heading to Nara Park to feed bowing deer and see Todai-ji’s Great Buddha up close. Expect laughter, small surprises, and moments that stay with you long after you’re back.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Li, our guide, grinned when I asked if people really bow to the deer in Nara or just pretend for photos. “No, no — the deer bow first,” she said, and then showed us how. I was still thinking about that as we squeezed into the van in Osaka (Shinsaibashi pickup is right by the subway). The drive to Kyoto went by with Li pointing out little things — a bakery with red bean buns she likes, someone’s laundry flapping on a tiny balcony. It felt like being shown around by a friend who actually lives here.

The first real jolt of the day was Fushimi Inari Shrine. I’d seen pictures of those 1,000 orange torii gates but walking through them is different — they creak a bit under your hand and there’s this faint woody smell mixed with incense. It was busy but somehow quiet too; locals were climbing up in business suits (I guess praying for good luck at work is serious business). My legs burned after a while but I didn’t mind. We stopped for bottled water (included) and Li told us about Inari, rice god — I tried repeating the Japanese name and got it wrong; she laughed but said it was close enough.

Lunch break in Gion was loose — we wandered narrow lanes where old wooden houses lean into each other. Some shopkeepers nodded as we passed but mostly kept to themselves. I grabbed something fried on a stick (no idea what) and watched two women in kimono take selfies near a lantern. Didn’t spot any geisha but maybe that’s just luck. After lunch we drove on to Nara; the air felt different there — more open, kind of grassy.

Nara Park is full of these almost-too-bold deer. They really do bow if you hold out those little crackers (200 yen from vendors), and one nibbled my sleeve when I ran out. Kids were shrieking and laughing everywhere. The walk to Todai-ji Temple took longer than I expected — lots of steps, watch your knees — but stepping inside that huge wooden hall with the Buddha towering overhead made me go quiet for once. Light filtered through high windows and you could hear sandals shuffling on old floorboards. On the way back to Osaka I half-dozed in the van, still thinking about those orange gates twisting up the hillside.
