The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clatter of glasses — not loud, just this soft background music as people shuffled in. I’d barely made it past the door when someone handed me a tiny glass of local craft beer (I think it was yuzu-flavored? Tart, anyway). The bar was already buzzing, but not in that overwhelming way — more like everyone was half-nervous, half-excited to see who they’d end up talking to. Our host, Kenji, waved us over with this huge grin and started introducing people. His English is better than mine on a good day. I remember thinking: okay, maybe I won’t be standing in the corner tonight after all.

We kicked off with an icebreaker game that involved saying something weird about your hometown. I panicked and said “we have squirrels the size of cats,” which got a laugh from Li (she’s from Shanghai) but then she told me about her city’s soup dumplings and now I want to go there. The best part was how easy it felt to switch between English and Japanese — sometimes both in one sentence if you’re brave enough. There were expats who’d been in Kyoto for years, a couple of students just passing through, even a local guy who taught me how to pronounce “otsukaresama” (I’m still not sure I nailed it). The whole thing felt like this moving puzzle — you’d chat with one group for ten minutes, then someone else would wave you over for snacks or another round.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed after an hour. Maybe it was the second beer or maybe just the way everyone seemed genuinely curious about each other’s stories. At one point Kenji snapped a photo of us mid-laugh (I probably had seaweed stuck in my teeth — oh well). The evening sort of blurred out after that; conversations drifting between travel plans and favorite ramen shops, people swapping Instagram handles or just promising to meet again next week. On my walk back through Gion later, I realized my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. That doesn’t happen every day.
