The experience

The day starts with a short orientation before heading south along the river for 25 minutes to reach Fushimi Inari Shrine. You'll spend 30 minutes on foot exploring the shrine's famous torii gates before the morning crowds arrive. From there, a 15-minute ride takes you to Tofukuji Temple, a Zen Buddhist site where you'll stop on the picturesque bridge before continuing.

An extended ride along the Kamo River follows, carrying you north toward Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion). The temple grounds open onto the Path of Philosophy, a narrow canal-side walkway you'll cycle slowly down before reaching Nanzenji Temple with its traditional gardens, ornate buildings and red brick aqueduct. Lunch is provided at a restaurant nearby, giving you time to rest before the final leg.

The last stretch takes you south along the Shirakawa Canal and through Gion's backstreets (the entertainment district where you might spot Maiko or Geiko) before returning to base. The e-bikes do the climbing for you, which matters on a six- to seven-hour day that mixes riding with walking temple grounds and stopping for coffee and lunch.
