The experience
Arashiyama sits two hours west of the port, so the day begins with a drive through the countryside to reach the Bamboo Grove and the gardens of Tenryu-ji Temple. From there the route moves east into central Kyoto, stopping at Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) around 11:30am, then Nishiki Market by 1pm for a lunch break among over 100 vendors selling fresh local food. The afternoon takes you through Pontocho and Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, where narrow streets lined with wooden machiya houses and teahouses offer a glimpse of traditional Japan, and if you're lucky, a sighting of geiko or maiko in kimono. The final stop is Fushimi Inari shrine, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the forested slopes of Mount Inari.
Because this is a private hire, you travel with only your group and no other passengers. The car and driver are yours for the full 10 hours, so the pace is yours to set: linger longer at a shrine, skip a stop if something else matters more, or adjust the order to suit the light or the crowds. A live guide in your chosen language handles the commentary and logistics. The only fixed constraint is the return time. The tour is built to get you back to the port by 6pm, which matters if your ship departs in the evening.
Entrance to Kinkaku-ji temple is included in the booking. Transportation costs (the car and driver hire) are paid separately in cash to the driver on the day of the tour. If your group wants to extend beyond 10 hours, additional charges apply for both the guide and the vehicle. Travelers should be comfortable with a moderate amount of walking across the day, and infants must sit on an adult's lap during the drive.

Is this one for you?The tour is built around a full day of walking and standing at five separate sites, so you'll need a moderate level of fitness and comfortable shoes. The early 8am departure and the fixed return time by 6pm are what make all five landmarks fit into one port day. If you prefer a slower pace or want to explore fewer sites in depth, a shorter custom itinerary can be arranged at checkout.
