Sketch a design on porcelain and watch craftsmen bring it to life in the kiln

A one-hour drawing class at Kutani Kosen Kiln in Kanazawa where you sketch a design on a blank ceramic vessel and select colors from a traditional Japanese palette. A skilled craftsman then completes the piece using authentic Kutani pigments, fires it in the kiln, and ships it to you within three months. The kiln, established in 1870, is Kanazawa's only working Kutani ware studio.

The experience

What makes Kutani ware different from other Japanese ceramics? The answer sits in the color and precision: Kutani porcelain is known for its vibrant hues and intricate hand-painted designs, a tradition that has run through Kanazawa since the region became famous for the style. Kutani Kosen Kiln, the only active Kutani kiln in the city, has carried that craft since 1870, and this workshop lets you step into the process yourself. You don't arrive as a spectator. You pick up a brush and learn the drawing technique on an actual blank vessel, choosing your colors from the traditional palette the studio uses.

The workshop runs about an hour. You'll sketch your design directly onto the ceramic piece and select which colors from the Japanese palette you want applied. That's where your hands-on work ends. From there, one of the studio's skilled craftsmen takes over, using traditional Kutani pigments to complete the coloring you've started. The piece then goes into the kiln for firing. Within three months, your finished ceramic arrives at your door. A handmade object that carries both your design and the kiln's centuries-old technique.

An English-speaking guide leads the class, so language isn't a barrier to learning. The workshop is wheelchair accessible, and the studio welcomes all fitness levels. The only cost beyond the lesson fee is the shipping to get your completed work home, which you arrange separately.
