The experience

What makes the Kumano Kodo different from other mountain hikes is that the trails were designed to be a spiritual journey, not just a way to move between places. For over 1,000 years, pilgrims have walked these routes through the southern Kansai region to reach the three Kumano shrines (Hongu Taisha, Hayatama Taisha and Nachi Taisha), which together form the Kumano Sanzan. The trails pass through quiet mountain hamlets, past waterfalls and through terrain that was once considered difficult and even dangerous. Your guide knows the history and the routes. You decide which stops matter most to you.

Before the tour begins, you'll choose 3–4 sites from the list of what to expect: Nachi Falls, Japan's tallest waterfall at 133 meters in a single drop; Kumano Nachi Taisha, where a Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine sit side by side as a rare fusion of both traditions; Kumano Hongu Taisha, the head shrine of over 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan and home to the world's largest torii gate at 33 meters tall; or Kumano Hayatama Taisha on the coast, with religious artifacts dating back to the 3rd century. The guide will build your 8-hour itinerary around your selections and your pace. All fitness levels can manage the trails. The terrain and the walking itself are what you're signing up for, not a strenuous climb.

The guide meets you at a designated point on foot and speaks English throughout the day. Entrance fees to the shrines and temples are not included in the tour price, nor is lunch or transportation to the meeting point. Those are your own arrangements. If you want to visit multiple sites, the guide's entry fees cover only the ones you've listed in advance. The Kumano Kodo is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking it is the pilgrimage itself.
