Rent a kimono from 150 options at Josaien in Kumamoto, dress in about 10 minutes with professional help, then spend the day in the costume at nearby Suizenji Park and around Kumamoto Castle. The rental includes admission to Suizenji Park, Japanese-patterned tabi socks, a drawstring purse, and a printed photo taken with props like swords and umbrellas. Return by 5:00 pm, or arrange to return your kimono at the Suizenji store instead for an extra fee.

The experience

Start by walking through 150 kimonos on the rack at Josaien, a store steps from Kumamoto Castle. Staff help you narrow down the choice, then you pick tabi socks and a patterned drawstring purse to match. Change into the socks, and a professional dresser wraps and ties the kimono around you in about 10 minutes: the obi, the layers, the whole thing done right. Hair ornaments are available to rent separately if you want them. There's no limit to how many you use.

Before you leave the store, staff photograph you in the kimono, sometimes with a sword or a Japanese umbrella as a prop. Those photos get printed and handed to you as a gift. Suizenji Park sits 20 minutes away by Kumamoto City Tram, famous for its spring water and the views it frames. A garden built to be walked through in costume. A free shuttle bus also runs from Josaien to Kumamoto Castle if you want to photograph yourself there first, where the 400-year-old structure looks its best against the formal dress.

The rental is yours until 5:00 pm. If you'd rather not come back to Josaien, you can return the kimono at the Suizenji store instead for a small additional fee, which means you stay in costume as long as the park is open and skip the trip back across the city.
