The experience
The tour starts with pickup at Kochi Shin Port or nearby hotels, then you and your guide shape the day around what interests you most. Before arrival, you choose from a list that includes Kochi Castle (one of only three original Japanese castles where the main gate survives), along with the Makino Botanical Garden on Godaisan hilltop, Chikurinji temple with its five-story pagoda, the Yokoyama Manga Museum, Katsurahama beach and its Sakamoto Ryoma museum, or the Sunday market if you're visiting on a weekend. The market has run since 1690 and stretches a kilometer with over 500 stalls selling produce, fish, handicrafts and local food. Ryugado Cave, one of Japan's three major limestone caves, is also an option. The sightseeing course takes you through stalactites and formations shaped over 175 million years.
A licensed guide interprets in English or Japanese and carries deep knowledge of Kochi's history, from the Tosa kingdom through the samurai era to modern times. The guide's entry fees to the sites you choose are included. You pay only for your own admission and any meals. The vehicle is private (either a regular car for up to two passengers or a van for up to seven), so the pace and stops stay entirely yours. Six hours gives you time to move unhurried between sites without rushing through the city's compact layout.
Kochi's shopping arcades connect many attractions and make walking between them part of the experience. Harimayabashi bridge, though only 20 meters long, anchors a local folktale about forbidden love that became part of the Yosakoi festival song. Hirome Ichiba, a market and food court near the castle with over 60 shops and shared seating, is easy to reach at the end of the arcades. If you want to see how Japanese figures are made, KAIYODO Space Factory in nearby Nankoku offers a behind-the-scenes look at soft vinyl production and collectibles.
