Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Kochi Castle and Local Markets
- Visit Kochi Hachimangu Shrine
- Walk through Obiyamachi shopping street
- Explore Kochi Castle and enjoy views
- Experience Hirome Market and taste local food
The experience
Kochi Hachimangu Shrine opens the tour: one of the city's oldest Shinto shrines, where you learn about shrine rituals, practice hand purification and bowing, and draw omikuji fortune slips. From there the route moves through Obiyamachi, the central shopping street lined with local stores and everyday life, then into Hirome Market, an indoor gathering place where locals eat and shop. The famous seared bonito (Katsuo no Tataki) is the signature dish here, and many shops operate on a cash basis.
Kochi Castle is the centerpiece: a rare original structure from the Edo period with the keep still standing. You explore the interior with your guide, who walks you through the city's history, and climb to the top for panoramic views. The castle has stairs and steep slopes, so the pace reflects that terrain. Your guide handles photos and shares them via Google Drive afterward.
On Sundays, Hirome Market may include a visit to the Sunday Market (Nichiyo-ichi), Japan's largest open-air market. Lunch at Hirome Market is at your own expense. If you arrive by cruise ship, the port sits 20–30 minutes from JR Kochi Station. Shuttle service and taxis are available, and your guide can meet you at the port if you request it in advance (taxi fare is separate).
