The experience
What does it feel like to break a board under the instruction of someone who won the All-Japan karate tournament? This class answers that question in a private dojo in Kagoshima, the prefecture where the Renshinkan lineage was founded. Hirokazu Inada, the champion who teaches here, runs this as real karate instruction, not a tourist performance. You arrive, change into a dogi (the traditional uniform), and spend the first part of the hour learning rei (the bow that carries the soul of karate), and the basic stances and strikes that form the foundation of the Renshinkan style.
The class moves through a simple kata, a choreographed sequence of movements that teaches you to move like a samurai. Then comes the moment most people book for: board breaking. You strike a wooden board under Inada's guidance, the board snaps, and you keep the pieces as a souvenir. The whole thing is captured on camera with a smartphone stand and lighting so you have the footage. Afterward, you receive a personalized certificate of completion with your name, a white folding fan with your name written in Japanese calligraphy and a card explaining its meaning, and a cup of traditional Kagoshima green tea or matcha.
Cruise passengers arriving at Marine Port Kagoshima can book this class around their ship's schedule. The dojo is about 20 minutes from the pier by taxi; Inada arranges a local taxi to meet you at the terminal with a name board at no charge, and you pay the driver directly (roughly JPY 2,700 one way; cards are accepted). Start times are timed so you return well before all-aboard. If your port call is cancelled, contact the operator and they will work with the booking platform to cancel without charge.
