The experience
You arrive in Hirosaki during cherry blossom season (late April through early May) with a free afternoon and no plan for how to see the park's 2,600 trees without wandering in circles. The guide meets you at your hotel, picks you up by bus, and walks you straight into Hirosaki Park, where about 80 types of cherry trees fill the grounds. The Yoshino cherry, said to be Japan's oldest, stands among them. A local guide who knows the park's layout and the trees' patterns walks you to the spots where the blossoms peak, rather than leaving you to guess which corner of the park is worth your time.
The day unfolds through the park's landmarks. You see Hirosaki Castle, a three-story tower rebuilt in the Edo Period and the only castle tower in the Tohoku area to survive that era. It stands on the southwestern edge of the grounds. You walk the cherry blossom tunnel along the west moat, where the trees arch overhead. If the water is calm, you can see the blossoms reflected in the moat itself. The guide takes you to the Tsugaru-han Neputa Mura, a museum where fan-shaped floats from the local Neputa Festival are on display and live Tsugaru-shamisen performances happen during the tour season. You also visit a merchant's residence from the late Edo Period, now a brewery, and a Renaissance-style library built to commemorate the Japanese-Russo War victory in 1906.
The tour runs six hours total, which gives you time to move between stops without rushing and to stand in the park during different light. The guide speaks English or Japanese. You choose at booking. Hotel drop-off can be arranged for an extra fee if you'd rather not navigate back on your own after six hours of walking. The bus ticket and all park entrance fees are included, so there's nothing to buy at the gate.
