Step back in time wearing traditional kimono as you explore Himeji’s historic streets and fortress.

This guided tour of Himeji Castle pairs the castle exploration with a yukata dressing experience, so you walk the fortress and the historic town wearing traditional kimono attire. A certified guide leads you through the castle in English, Chinese or Japanese, and the tour includes private transportation to and from JR Himeji Station. The experience runs three to four hours, with lunch left to your choice.

Step-by-step itinerary

Yukata rental and Himeji Castle tour

  • Meet staff at JR Himeji Station
  • Change into yukata at rental store
  • Purchase or receive castle tickets
  • Guided tour of Himeji Castle
  • Drop-off at station or accommodation

The Experience

You'll meet the guide at the Central Ticket Gate of JR Himeji Station, then head to Kabushiki Kaisha Ogiya, a clothing rental store founded in 1950 with over 70 years of experience dressing visitors in yukata. The staff fit you in the traditional garment—men's yukata are available alongside women's—so you're dressed in the attire before the castle walk begins. This is not a costume moment; you're wearing what Japanese travelers have worn for centuries, and the guide will explain the history and etiquette as you move through the town in it.

At Himeji Castle, tickets are purchased at the booth (the guide may arrange them in advance if crowds are heavy), and then a certified guide takes you through the fortress itself. The castle tour covers the structure's layout, defensive features and historical significance, with the guide speaking English, Chinese or Japanese depending on your group. You'll walk the grounds and interior passages at a pace the guide sets, stopping at key points to explain what you're standing in front of. The yukata stays on throughout—it's part of how you experience the space, not separate from it.

Private transportation is included to and from the station, so you're not navigating Himeji's transit system with luggage or managing the walk back after the tour ends. The guide will drop you at the nearest station or your accommodation. Lunch isn't included, which means you can eat where and when you want during the tour, or grab something after. The whole experience runs between three and four hours, and the tour suits all fitness levels.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to wear yukata while exploring the castle rather than viewing it in street clothes—the traditional dress is part of how you experience both the fortress and the town, not an add-on to a standard sightseeing walk. The guide handles the route and the history, so you're free to focus on the castle itself and the feel of moving through Himeji in kimono attire.
