The experience

You arrive in Himeji with a guide who meets you and takes charge of the day. Tickets to Himeji Castle are purchased at the gate (or arranged in advance if crowds are heavy), and a certified guide leads you through the castle with detailed commentary. The castle sits as borrowed scenery for Koko-en Garden next door: an authentic Japanese garden where you can walk the grounds, and if you choose, participate in a traditional tea ceremony on the spot.

Lunch happens at a restaurant you pick beforehand: sushi, Japanese cuisine, tsukemen, or another option you prefer. In the afternoon, the route heads to Tatsuno, a castle town where the streets still hold Karo-mon gates, samurai residences, and working breweries that have fermented soy sauce for four centuries.
