The experience

You arrive in Furano with a free afternoon or a morning to spare, and a driver meets you to build the day around what you actually want to see. The tour runs four hours and stays flexible: you pick three or four stops from the list before you book, and the driver takes you between them in a private vehicle. There's no fixed itinerary, no group waiting for stragglers, and no time wasted on sites that don't interest you. The driver speaks English and knows the region well enough to time your stops: early morning at the lavender fields when crowds are thin, or midday at Ningle Terrace when the light hits the log houses differently.

Furano is famous for two things: lavender and cheese. The lavender farms produce seven colors of flowers together (purple lavender, white baby's breath, orange California poppies), and bloom from mid-July through August. Lavender East, four kilometers away, grows lavender alone and is worth the detour if you're there in July. The cheese factory sits on a hillside where cows graze in the open air, and you can watch production through glass windows, see the history of cheesemaking on the second floor, and try gelato made from local milk. The Furano wine cellar, housed in a red-brick building, shows fermentation and lets you taste what's in production. Biei's flower hills run from May through early October with lupines, poppies, lilies, cosmos and sunflowers rotating through the season. You can walk or ride a tracker bus that carries over 300,000 visitors a year. Ningle Terrace is a forest shopping village of 15 log houses where you can buy handmade goods, make your own candles or paper crafts, and sit in a coffee shop. Blue Lake appears that color because of aluminum from hot springs upstream and looks best on clear mornings.

The tour does not include entrance fees to attractions, so budget for any sites you choose to enter. If you need a car seat or booster seat, contact the operator in advance. They have a limited supply and rear-facing seats are not available. Pickup starts in Furano. If you need to begin in Biei or Asahikawa, an additional fee applies and you'll need to arrange it ahead of time.

Is this one for you?Choose the van if you're traveling as a group of four or more. The regular car works for a couple or a family of three. The four-hour window means you'll see multiple sites in one afternoon, so pick stops that cluster geographically (lavender and Lavender East together, or the flower gardens and Blue Lake) rather than spreading them across the region.
