The experience
You meet a Hakata Maiko near Kushida Shrine and participate in an authentic tea ceremony rather than watching one from a distance. The experience centers on doing the ritual yourself: preparing and drinking matcha while the Maiko explains the movements and philosophy behind each gesture. An English-speaking guide translates, so the cultural details come through without the language barrier. This is not a performance you observe. It is a hands-on exchange where you learn by doing.
After the ceremony, you move to a photo session with trick art backdrops. The Maiko poses with you for photographs that play with perspective and illusion: images designed to surprise and amuse when you look at them later. These are the kind of photos that need explanation when you show them to friends, which is part of what makes them memorable. The whole activity runs about an hour, compact enough to fit into a morning or afternoon without reshaping your day.
At checkout, you pick one of three options: the matcha ceremony alone; the ceremony plus the photo session; or both of those plus a traditional Japanese dance performance by the Maiko, which costs extra. Green tea is included in all versions. Children from age one are welcome. Public transportation stops nearby, so you can reach the location without a car or a separate transfer booking.
What’s included
- Green tea.
- English-speaking guide.
- photo session with trick art effects (included in two of the three options).

Is this one for you?Pick the matcha ceremony alone if you want the cultural core without photos, or add the photo session to leave with images that capture the encounter. The dance upgrade works if you want the fullest cultural immersion and have the extra budget. Without it, the ceremony and photos already fill the hour completely.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 9 years).
What exactly do I do during the tea ceremony part?
You perform the tea ceremony yourself under the Maiko's guidance. She walks you through preparing matcha (whisking the powdered green tea with hot water), and drinking it according to the traditional method. The English-speaking guide explains the meaning and history of each step so you understand what you are doing, not just following motions.
Can I choose not to do the photo session if I just want the tea ceremony?
Yes. The Matcha Tea Ceremony Only option includes just the tea ceremony and the guide. You skip the trick art photos entirely. The other two options add the photo session, and the most complete option adds a dance performance as well.
Is the Maiko in full traditional costume the whole time?
The Maiko wears traditional dress throughout the experience, including during the tea ceremony and the photos. That is part of what makes the cultural exchange authentic and what creates the striking images in the trick art photographs.
How do I get to Kushida Shrine for this activity?
Public transportation options are available nearby the shrine. The activity does not include hotel pickup or transportation, so you will arrange your own way there using Fukuoka's bus or train network.
What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
Green tea, the English-speaking guide, and the photo session (if you choose an option that includes it) are all included. A traditional Japanese dance performance is available as an upgrade for an additional fee beyond your base option price.
