The experience

Six hours is enough to see Fukuoka's mix of old and new without rushing. Your guide meets you at your hotel or another point you pick, and from there the day follows what you want to experience. The city holds temples founded over a thousand years ago (Kushida Shrine dates to AD 757 and hosts the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival each July) alongside modern parks and a reclaimed waterfront built after the 1989 Asia Pacific Expo. Dazaifu Tenmangu sits outside the city center but draws visitors for its shrine grounds and the nearby museum of regional history. The guide speaks English and holds a government license, so the explanations go beyond what a map provides.

Before the tour starts, you tell the operator which three or four sites interest you most. That list shapes the route: you might combine Ohori Park's two-kilometer walking path around a central pond with the Hakata Machiya Hometown Museum to see how people lived in old Hakata, or skip inland entirely and spend the afternoon at Momochi Seaside and Uminonakamichi Seaside Park on the bay. Yanagibashi Rengo Market works too if you want to walk through the kitchen of Hakata: over forty vendors sell fresh fish and produce, and small restaurants serve seafood donburi. The yatai food stalls on Nakasu Island open in the evening, so a late afternoon stop there is possible if timing allows.
