The experience
The day starts at 9 a.m. from Lawson near Fukuoka Oriental Hotel and moves through three distinct landscapes. The Southern Aso Railway carries you slowly through foothills and countryside for about 40 minutes, winding past the Aso Five Peaks, forests, streams and seasonal changes: spring greens, summer lush growth, autumn color or winter quiet. The train fare (¥490–2,000 per person) is paid on the day. If you prefer not to ride, the tour bus continues to the next stop instead.
Mount Aso's Nakadake Crater is the tour's centerpiece, though access is currently restricted to viewing from a distance due to a recent helicopter accident. You'll see white volcanic plumes rising and feel the scale of one of Japan's most active volcanoes. Afterward, Kusasenri Plateau opens into a vast green plain at the foot of Mount Eboshi, where you spend roughly 90 to 100 minutes walking through grassland, watching grazing cattle and horses, and catching distant views of volcanic smoke. Optional horseback riding is available for an extra fee. The Aso Volcano Museum rounds out the geology and natural history of the region.
Kumamoto Castle comes last, with about 110 minutes to explore. Built in 1601 by the famed castle builder Kato Kiyomasa, it ranks among Japan's three great castles and is known for its steep stone walls, the "Musha-gaeshi", and the elegant Honmaru Goten Pavilion. Castle admission (¥800) is separate. The tour returns to Fukuoka by evening, though weekend and holiday traffic may push return past 9 p.m. Your guide and driver cover any overtime. You'll receive guide and driver contact details by email the evening before.
