The experience
What does it actually feel like to hold a brush the way a calligrapher does? You'll find out in the first few minutes, when the instructor shows you how to grip the brush, how much ink to load, and how the angle of your wrist changes everything. The session starts with the basic strokes (dots, lines, sweeps) the building blocks of every character. You practice on paper until the motion feels less foreign, then move to hiragana and kanji, learning how each one is constructed and where the weight of the brush matters most.
The workshop happens inside Takumi, a shop that has occupied the same space for fifty years. One wall holds ukiyo-e prints, and the space itself becomes part of the experience: quiet, focused, built for the kind of work you're doing. You have all the tools: brushes handmade in Kumano, the town that supplies Japan's best brush-makers; ink; paper; everything you need. The instructor, an award-winning calligrapher, works at your pace and doesn't expect you to arrive knowing anything.
When you're ready, you move to your final piece. You choose a word or phrase that matters to you, and you write it on either a traditional hand fan or a shikishi board. Both are real objects you'll use or display, not practice scraps. That finished artwork is yours to take home. If you want photos of the moment, the shop will take them during the session and send them to you free afterward.
