The experience

The day starts early from Beppu with a brief stop at Sagiridai Observatory, where the Yufuin valley spreads below you. By 10 a.m. you're at Chojabaru Plateau, roughly 1,000 meters up in Aso-Kuju National Park, where one of Japan's largest intermediate marshlands sits. After a short lecture on Nordic walking technique, you spend about two hours on the trails of Tadewara Marshland (a Ramsar Site since 2005, home to wetland plants and waterfowl), moving at a pace that lets you absorb the landscape without rushing. The walk ends with forest bathing, a quiet moment to let the highland air settle into you.

At noon you reach Bebenko, a farmhouse restaurant where lunch is Oita Wagyu steak: beef from Oita Prefecture's Kuroge Wagyu cattle, graded 4 or above, known for fine marbling and a clean aftertaste. The meal is included. Alternative options are available if you request them. After lunch comes the Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge: 390 meters long, 173 meters high, 1.5 meters wide, and the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. You walk it yourself, taking in the views from that height.

By 3 p.m. you're dropped at Yufuin Station with roughly two hours to spend as you choose. Walk Yunotsubo Kaido Street, visit Lake Kinrin, or simply sit in the town. At 5 p.m. you meet the vehicle again at Yume Hiroba Square. If your feet need it, a Doctor Fish foot spa is available there: small fish in warm spring water, a gentle way to end the day before heading back to Beppu.
