The Experience

You're already at the ticket counter of Abeno Harukas, and the elevator doors close behind you. The name means "to brighten, to clear up" in old Japanese, and standing on the 60th floor with the whole city spreading out in a 360-degree glass view, you understand why. Osaka unfolds beneath you — the rivers, the neighborhoods, the way the light hits the buildings at different angles depending on which direction you face. The observatory sits 300 meters up, and on clear days you can see all the way to the mountains.

The 58th floor is different — it's an open-air plaza called Sky Garden 300, so you're standing outside at that height, which feels less like looking at the city and more like being inside it, just lifted. There's a restaurant up there too if you want to eat while the view does the work. The shopping floors below (Abeno Harukas has a whole department store attached) are fine if you need them, and they do tax refunds on the spot for non-Japanese visitors, but most people come for the height and the sight lines, not the shops.
