  • Have lunch and paint Kokeshi dolls
  • Watch Ninja and traditional shows
  • Return to Muroran port

The experience

The tour starts at Muroran port, where your guide meets you for the drive to Noboribetsu. Hell Valley sits just above the town: a volcanic landscape where steam vents and sulfurous streams rise from the ground, the source of the region's hot spring waters. Walking the trails through the wooded hills takes 20 to 30 minutes to reach Oyunuma, a sulfurous pond with a surface temperature of 50 degrees Celsius and a smaller, hotter mud pond nearby. Autumn brings the best scenery here.

The hot spring resort is the centerpiece of the day. You can choose from about 35 types of baths, each with different mineral compositions. The sulfur spring has a hydrogen ion concentration of 2.4 and a strong bactericidal effect. Glauber's salt spring, used historically as a "bath for wounds" and "bath for palsy," has a concentration of 2.2 and is the most acidic. The time you spend soaking is yours to use as you like.

After the baths, the vehicle takes you to Jidaiya, an amusement facility where lunch is served. You choose from chicken, seafood, or three types of meat. If time remains, you can paint a kokeshi doll or watch performances including a Ninja show or Japanese Traditional Culture Theatre. The tour ends with the drive back to Muroran port.
