The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Montego Bay, Negril, RunAway Bay or Grand Palladium, depending on which option you choose. You travel by air-conditioned vehicle to Rose Hall Great House, a colonial mansion on the north coast. The guide walks you through the rooms and grounds, telling the story of Annie Palmer, known as the White Witch for her alleged poisonings and numerous affairs. The lower level holds the traps that were used to catch enslaved people attempting escape. The guide points out details like the portrait of Annie Palmer whose eyes seem to follow you through the rooms.
From there you head to the Luminous Lagoon for a 30-minute guided boat tour. The guide explains the science: dinoflagellates, microscopic oceanic plankton, create an emerald-green and ultramarine glow when the water is disturbed. You're invited to swim in the lagoon yourself and watch the water light up around you as you move. The lagoon is completely harmless despite its eerie appearance. After the swim, you return to shore where mellow music plays and you receive a complimentary drink and Jamaican sweets. A fire blower and limbo expert then lead an interactive show.
The whole outing runs between two and three hours from start to finish. Private transport means your group stays together in one air-conditioned vehicle, and the guide handles all the talking and logistics.

What is the Luminous Lagoon and why does the water glow?
The Luminous Lagoon is on Jamaica's north coast and glows because of dinoflagellates, microscopic oceanic plankton that generate emerald-green and ultramarine light when water is physically disturbed. It is one of only a few lagoons in the world with this phenomenon, and scientists and visitors consider Jamaica's version the brightest.
Can I actually swim in the glowing water, or is it just a viewing tour?
You can swim in the Luminous Lagoon. The water looks eerie but is completely harmless, and the guide invites you to get in and watch it light up as you move through it.
Who was Annie Palmer and why is Rose Hall called the house of the White Witch?
Annie Palmer was a colonial-era figure tied to Rose Hall Great House whose legend has circulated for generations. She earned the name White Witch because of her numerous lovers and the allegation that she poisoned three husbands.
