Climb a waterfall, then float downriver serenaded by your guide

This private combo tour from Ocho Rios pairs two contrasting water experiences: a guided hike up the natural steps of Dunn's River Falls (180 feet high, over 600 feet long) and a bamboo raft float down the White River with live reggae commentary. Transport by air-conditioned minivan, a guide in English, and hotel or port pickup are included. The tour runs 5 hours and suits families with children from age 2, though moderate fitness helps with the waterfall climb.

The experience

The day starts with a float down the White River on a bamboo raft, where your guide accompanies you the whole way, playing Bob Marley and other Jamaican hits while you drift past the birds and scenery. It is the quiet half of the day: no exertion, just the sound of water and music. After that comes the work: Dunn's River Falls, where you climb 960 feet up the cascading steps by holding a human chain with other climbers. The falls are 180 feet high and over 600 feet long, with natural terraced pools at each level. Most people climb partway and soak in the pools rather than going all the way to the top. The park has a kiddies' pool if younger children want to stay in the shallows.

An air-conditioned minivan picks you up from your hotel or cruise ship and handles all the driving, so you do not navigate between the two sites. Your guide provides live commentary during the ride and stays with you at both stops. Bottled water is included throughout. The whole experience takes 5 hours from pickup to drop-off. Bring water shoes (the rocks are slippery), a towel, and sunscreen. The sun reflects hard off the water and stone.
